Question just because things are quiet tonight. How many of you made your tulpas with a purpose in mind (besides just wanting company)? What was the purpose?

I don't want this to get drowned out, excuse my tiredness While several of us were accidental, Gray (original host) indented to create most of us. Not including integrations, me (oops you're not Dream), and Exabier (oh shit welp you can stay), and Fish (whoopsie), and I guess Chrome (God???, also Adriel now), here are the following: Dream- unconscious representative guardian turned tulpa except not really, ugh it's complicated Adriel = {Tom- story character, Id rep, the "villain" ; Gerodious- story character, more like a spirit guide, Chrome- explained} Evergreen = {Evergreen- Help motivate me to do work (this fails) ; Fish- explained} Ian = {Bune- Dream revive attempt 1 ; Keatan- Dream revive attempt 2} Fhern = {Hope- intrusive thought turned good! (this kind of worked) ; Fernardo- story character, super ego} Ryan - Intrusive thought that Gray made and just kept I guess Moltosha- Same thing Blue- Can you take over the system while I'm gone? Hi! You said Hope is/was an intrusive thought turned good. If you are comfortable with it, would you be able to explain what that means. We are having a hard time with intrusive thoughts as well and maybe I could find a new mwthod.

My part was originally an intrusive thought, and Gray trying to force my part to be good both worked and didn't. The long story short is Gray denied my Hope part his intrusive past and I as Hope incorporated that later on. With Moltosha and Ryan, they acted as their intrusive selves but slowly changed over time. While you can make a tulpa from an intrusive thought (my Hope part was a demon), I don't recommend it. It's usually easier to start from scratch. Otherwise, if your young tulpa is sharing intrusive thoughts, that's normal and you can ignore those thoughts. Your tulpa likely wouldn't want to identify with them anyway. Tulpas that are angry and trying to speak their mind have logic behind their actions, intrusive thoughts generate anxiety with no logical basis whatsoever.

I know this has been debated forEVER but on the differences between tulpas and imaginary friends, it seems their creation method is nearly exactly the same just with an added intent for tulpas - which begs the question of how their sentience arises altogether

I think there is no such catalyst. Imaginary friend is a tulpa (or not) depending on how you perceive them. There is no hard difference between sentience of a tulpa and an imaginary friend. There is a difference how you perceive a character who is a tulpa and a character who is just an imaginary friend. Although it's not completely clear either. Some people might consider imaginary friends not sentient and other people don't deny them sentience.

I think most tulpas are not functionally different from ordinary imaginary friends. What defines a tulpa is rather their relationship with you than their inner properties.

I've got a whole big rant about this somewhere. In my opinion the differences boil down to tulpas being listened to instead of being a "tool with which to be someone else", and the fact that you let go of your control of what a tulpa does and let their behavior define who they are instead of what you intend them to be (long term, early on you have to start with something)

Not like they actively communicated to me, but I could ‘feel’ writing them wrong vs right if that makes sense

yeah my tulpa is much more independent than my OCs in that she makes her presence known in my mind without my thinking of her. While my OCs talk to me, i have to think of them and sort of "invite" them into my mind first

OCs being vampires sounds so apt though now that I think of it

for me, the main difference between my tups and my OCs is that my tups want to be Known. Hence things like wanting their own things, talking to people, etc

Other people might classify what you call OC as a tulpa though. Some of our companions like spending time with us rather than external people and it's perfectly okay too.
